To provide students with the foundations of critical approaches to understanding English language teaching and learning with a particular emphasis on basic level learners. The specialist area is teaching English to primary-level English language learners.





Discipline (S) / Subject Area (S)

English language learning and teaching; major in English language teaching for basic level learners, associated minors in English language, translation, English literature, education and psychology. English language (teaching) 67% (65% teaching & learning, 21% Linguistics and 12% Literature), 20% Psychology & Education and 12% university -related courses and electives.


General / Specialist Focus 

General with emphasis on identifying and using suitable approaches and strategies of language teaching and learning.



Language teaching orientation, with a strong component of communication and interpersonal skills in the English language. Special tracks are provided for future English language lifelong learners and use.


Distinctive Features  

Students may emphasize English language teaching in general and primarily focus on Kurdish EFL learners.



Employability & Further Education



Position as an English language teacher at the Bachelor's level in the public/private basic schools. Position as a translator/interpreter, journalism.

Education Style


Learning and Teaching Approaches

The general learning style is student-centered task-based learning. There are lecture courses, accompanied by presentations, class participation, assignments, and home-works. Most learning is in small groups (up to 25 students) and emphasizes discussion, preparation of presentations autonomously and in small groups. In the final year about half-time is dedicated to real classroom observation and teaching practice, the second half is for the final graduation thesis which is also presented and discussed with a group of teachers.


Assessment Methods

Examination: Written for the theoretical and practical language use aspects; oral exams for practicing language use skills and teaching practice purposes. Presentations, Assignments, Reports, Quizzes, etc.

---Critical and Self-Critical abilities: the ability to think in scientific terms, pose problems, gather data, analyze them and propose findings.

---Written and oral communication in the English Language: ability to write and speak correctly according to the Various Communication registers (informal, formal, scientific) 

--Ability to work autonomously, taking initiatives, and managing time: the ability to organize complex efforts over a period of time, producing the required result on schedule.

--Ability to work with others: in a multidisciplinary multi-national setting.


Subject Specific

--Basic General knowledge: orientation in the major themes of present approaches and methods of teaching English as a foreign language.

--Applying Knowledge in Practice: ability to use background information and information retrieval skills to teach the English language in basic schools.

--Awareness of the ongoing nature of teaching/learning research and debate

--Specific Knowledge of the theories and approaches for the specific strategies to cope with early age learners (children and teenager learners).

--Ability to apply the theories of language testing and assessment in both forms of formative and summative assessment types. 

--Ability to use the appropriate terminology and modes of expression of the discipline in oral and written form in the English language.



Program Learning outcomes


Upon completion of the program, the graduate can demonstrate:

1)     Apply acquired knowledge and skills in language teaching and linguistics to be an effective EFL teacher.

2)     Develop English language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing by having learners engage in a range of communicative tasks and activities.

3)     Gain in-depth knowledge of the structure of the English language to better teach and understand the learning process for creating a proper learning environment with a special focus on the age group of 6-15 years.

4)     Use their understanding of theories of language learning and pedagogy to evaluate, select and adapt teaching materials in order to meet learners’ needs.

5)     Communicate effectively in professional, academic, and social contexts, and across a range of mediums including in person, on paper, and online.

6)     Learn how to assess English Language Learners and teach them effectively in all aspects of language: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

7)     Learn how languages function socially and culturally to better teach English Language Learners.

8)     Design and conduct researches studies that address pedagogical and linguistic issues related to English language teaching and learning.

9)     Critically consider their professional development to cope with the technological inventions and be able to use them for teaching and learning purposes.

10)   Form a critical understanding of English literature that informs teaching and learning.

11)   Consider students’ needs, language development levels, ages, intelligence types, and learning styles while preparing a lesson plan

12)   Provide an atmosphere that enhances full student participation and increases student success and provides feedback for students at an appropriate time and manner.
